CHESAPEAKE – Meredithe Louise Bowman, 79, of the 2700 block of Mark Street, died January 5, 2004 in Chesapeake. A native of Waterford, PA, she was the daughter of the late Carl D. and Ellen E. Hunt, and the wife of the late Linwood B. Bowman, Sr. Mrs. Bowman was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy and, following the war, worked in various factories for defense contractors. She was known for her immense love of family and children in general, and was called “Grandma” by all the children in her neighborhood. She loved long walks, collecting coins and stamps, and both crossword and jigsaw puzzles. Mrs. Bowman was an Avon representative and collected money for the American Cancer Society.

Surviving are three daughters, Sandra Mae Bowman Salmon of Erie, PA, and Nancy Ellen Bowman Rose and Laurie Ann Bowman Burnett, both of Chesapeake; five sons, Linwood Bert Bowman, Jr. of Charlotte, NC, Thomas Lee Bowman and Rickey Allen Bowman, both of Chesapeake, James Michael Bowman of New Bern, NC, and Bruce Wayne Bowman of Bluffton, SC; three sisters, Dorothy Peeples of Waterford, PA, Marjorie McStraw of Erie, PA, and Elizabeth Stafford of Waterford, PA; two brothers, Carl Hunt, Jr. of Waterford, PA and Maurice William Hunt of Wenonah, NJ; 22 grandchildren; ten great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Cheryl Ann Ruttenberg; a sister, Carolyn Morrison; and a brother, Bruce Richard Hunt.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, with Pastor James Neeson officiating. The family will receive friends at Graham Funeral Home, Greenbrier Chapel, 1112 Kempsville Road, on Wednesday from 7-8 p.m. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the charity of their choice.
