Obituary for Billy O. Smithdeal

Billy O. Smithdeal
VIRGINIA BEACH-Billy O. Smithdeal, 83, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2012 after a courageous battle with congestive heart failure.
Billy lived most of his life in Virginia Beach and worked in tunnel and road construction until his retirement. He never met a stranger and was known for his infectious smile and willingness to help anyone in need. He was known as a “jack of all trades”; and enjoyed woodworking, building beautiful furniture, gardening, NASCAR and loved restoring antique automobiles.
He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 64 years, Mary Anne Livingston Smithdeal, his daughter, Melissa Kneece; son, Jeffrey Smithdeal and his wife, Laurie. He was a wonderful “Papa” to his five grandchildren; Jennifer Smithdeal Ham and her husband, Allan, Jason Smithdeal and his wife, Chandonette, Jessica Smithdeal Younce and her husband, Zachary, Jeffrey Shaun Smithdeal and Megan Smithdeal. He was also “Big Papa” to nine beautiful great-grandchildren. Billy was blessed with very caring and wonderful friends and neighbors who have been instrumental in assuring his and Mary Anne’s wellbeing during these last months. Heartfelt thanks to Edward Shanley and the most incredible neighbors imaginable. During Billy’s sickness they were never more than a phone call away from whatever support or assistance was needed. Their love and support are deeply appreciated.
He was a member of Berkley Masonic Lodge #167 AF & AM of Chesapeake, VA and the International Union of Operating Engineers Local #147.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Graham Funeral Home, Chesapeake. A service to celebrate his life will begin at 6 p.m. with Rev. Ernest L. Trueblood officiating. Memorial donations in Billy’s name may be made to Kempsville Volunteer Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 62345, Virginia Beach, VA. 23466 or Wounded Warrior Project, P. O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675-8517 or thru their website at support.woundedwarriorproject.org.
