William George Spruill, 84, passed away May 8, 2019 at his home. Bill was born in Norfolk to the late Amy Geasland and George Raymond Spruill. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his sister, Amy Lou Spruill. Bill served his country in the United States Coast Guard and was a veteran of the Korean War; he then transferred to the Coast Guard Reserves, serving until his retirement. He was a graduate of Maury High School, William & Mary College, and George Washington University School of Law. Bill was a graduate of Virginia Bar Association and retired as a Federal Judge. He was an active member of the Tidewater Striders. Bill loved running and doing triathlons, which included biking and swimming. He enjoyed being a race walker, golfer and bowler; he even built and raced cars. Bill respected the cause of Black Americans striving for Civil Rights and was in Washington, DC when Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his "I Have A Dream" speech. What brought him the most joy involved his children where he served as a Scout Leader and was the announcer for their swim meets for 12 years. When his grandchildren came along, he was eager and ready to be involved in all their activities.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 59 years, Linda Vestal Spruill; sons, Stephen W. Spruill (Cindy), Bryan W. Spruill (Susan) and Collin W. Spruill (Rebecca); six grandchildren, Samantha (Chris), Sierra (Jason), Ezekiel, Matthew (Kendra), Bridget and Keara; five great-grandchildren, Makenzi, Paisley, Duke, Charlotte and Jack; a special family nephew Anders, Leslie, and Olivia Hellstrom; and many other nieces and nephews.

Dear Mrs. Spruill, My name is Fred Curry, we met at a local baseball game several years ago, both Bill
and my wife, Sharon, was also present. I took pictures during the game and a volunteer took pictures of
the four of us. Maybe you remember that time. Perhaps Bill mentioned my name as we both worked
out at Oak Grove Lake park in the mornings over a period of about a year several years ago,
That is the relationship that I had with Bill which was a rewarding experience for me because he shared
much of his views on life with me and fondly spoke of his family, particularly his son or grandson (l don't
remember which), who played in the Minor Baseball League. I learned quite a bit from Bill as we wind
sprinted and ran together to prepare for up-coming race-walking events with the Tidewater Striders.
Bill was a very good friend to me all along the way. I remember particularly when we talked about age
related aches and pains (l will be seventy-five in July), and how we had to do research on our particular
issues before we saw the doctors to make sure we got the right treatment. Bill was quite
knowledgeable about medical conditions and remedies and did not mind sharing them with me. He
mentioned to me that he had an on-going lower back pain, At the time I was being treated for an
orthopedic issue and recommended a medication called PENNSAID which he got a prescription from his
doctor to try out. Perhaps, you remember Bill applying this medication.
Again, I am pleased that I had the occasion to benefit from my friendship with Bill and will remember
him fondly. He was generous with sharing and teaching those of us who listened to his thinking and
observations of life's predicaments.
I will keep you and your family in mind as I reflect on my association and friendship with Bill. May you
and your family have peace and remember all that Bill shared with us.
Yours Truly,
Frederick & Sharon Curry
