Obituary for Sylvia Ann Peele

Sylvia Bedsole Peele passed away on December 1, 2022 after a long battle with dementia. While her passing feels far too soon for her family, we celebrate her rich and full life. Sylvia grew up in the Tidewater area with her parents, James and Annie Ruth Bedsole, and brothers Jimmy, Eddie, and Bob Bedsole. She graduated from Great Bridge High School in 1962 and earned her Associate’s Degree from Tidewater Community College. She enjoyed a successful and dynamic career at Bell Atlantic Telephone Company (now Verizon). After retiring in 1991, Sylvia owned and ran Personal Touch Travel Agency as both a professional pursuit and a passion project. She loved to explore new places with friends and family and did so at every opportunity.

Sylvia was also passionate about involvement in her community. She was an active member of Oaklette United Methodist Church. Sylvia served in the Chesapeake General Hospital Auxiliary for decades and was an Honored Queen of Job’s Daughters. She was an active member of the Pilot Club and held several leadership positions in the Chesapeake Chamber of Commerce.

Sylvia’s greatest passion was her family. She raised her two children in Chesapeake, Virginia; she also shared a very close relationship with her mother who lived close by. She tirelessly cared for her parents and mother-in-law as they aged. As Nana to ten grandchildren, her home was a summer camp and frequent weekend destination. When they could not come to her, she traveled both to their homes and with them around the world cooking up craft projects and daytime adventures along the way.

She is survived by her husband, Joe Peele; her children and children-in-law Stacy Bryant, Leann Kirk, Holly Peele, Cheri Peele, Brian Flood, and Ross Dorn; her grandchildren Amber, Brendan, Brandon, Cameron, Alexandra, Max, Kaylee, Nicholas, Mylee, and Keturah; and her great-grandchildren Vincent and Dominic.

Her family is deeply grateful to the loved ones who provided such critical support during the illness she adored. We thank you for all of your support: spiritual, emotional, and pragmatic. In lieu of flowers, please help us honor her battle with this disease by making a donation in her name to the Dementia Society of America.

Please join us for a celebration of her life on Sunday, December 11th at Oaklette United Methodist Church, 520 Oaklette Drive, Chesapeake, VA 23325
