Obituary for Shirley Mae Gaughan

Shirley Mae (Stewart) Gaughan, passed into eternal bliss on Monday, June 14, 2021, at her home in Slidell, Louisiana. She passed peacefully in the company of her loving daughter, Cheryl Wade-Schreiner and great-grandson, Timothy Cobb. Shirley was born to her loving parents Herman Cornelius Stewart and Carnie Dell (Fultcher) Stewart, on December 22, 1932, in Norfolk, VA. She was preceded in death by her daughter Linda Carol Smith, parents, and siblings: Oscar Stewart, Elizabeth Bray, William Stewart; husbands: Thomas Etheldred Smith Jr., Michael Edward Gaughan, and father of her eldest son Lytton Reginald Wheeler, and great-granddaughter Tasha Marie Williams. She is survived by her loving children: Thomas Smith (Linda), Willie Wise (Alan), Joseph Smith, Shirley Modlin (David), Susan Tackett, Cheryl Wade-Schreiner (Ronald); grandchildren: Sabrina Hinton, Christopher Smith, Bonita Frye, Erika Wilson, Justina Sung, Jacinda Cobb, Jessica Wade-Norris, Justin Smith, Brian Smith, Amanda Smith, Mariah Smith, Dylan Modlin; 19 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Shirley spent most of her life in the Tidewater area of Virginia. She was a devoted mother and often struggled to provide the best she could for her 6 children. She loved hosting “company” and sharing laughs with family and friends. She was always there to help and support those around her. She volunteered with numerous organizations over the years. Being extremely creative, she took great pleasure in creating numerous treasures for others. During her retirement, she loved to travel and visit her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She lived a full and meaningful life and will be missed by all who knew her. Visitation will be on Thursday, June 24, 2021, from 4-6 p.m. at Graham Funeral Home, 1112 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake. She will be laid to rest on Friday, June 25, 2021 at 10 a.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 8100 Granby St., Norfolk.
