Obituary for Sheng Hsiung Hsu

Sheng "Sam" Hsiung Hsu, 79, passed away peacefully at sunset on January 19, 2024 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, surrounded by family following complications from a heart attack on Christmas Day while visiting family.

Sheng was born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan to Cheng-Shou and Hsien-Wang Hsu. Sheng was an accomplished yet humble man. He possessed both a master’s degree in chemical engineering from National Taiwan University in Taipei, and a Ph. D in chemical engineering from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. Following schooling, Sheng worked for an impressive 30 years at Nestle RandD in Marysville, Ohio, receiving professional awards and patents for his research and inventions in food science, specializing in coffee.

But work was not the most important part of his life. Above all else, Sheng was a tirelessly dedicated husband, father, grandfather, son, and friend. All the people that he cared for could always rely on him for his gentle humor, steadfast advice, and unwavering love. His philosophy on life was simple. and contagious. All that knew him, couldn’t help but adopt his innate tendency for continuous curiosity on all topics, humility before nature, and living a genuine, thankful life. This trait is reflected most strongly in one of his favorite past-times - writing poetry. Sheng was a talented, self-taught poet, elegantly combining his learnings from both science and nature into his writing, culminating in a number of self-published books and printings in local American and Taiwanese newspapers.

Sheng was preceded in death by his father, Cheng-Shou; mother, Hsien-Wang; and sister Ming. He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Mei-Mei Hsu; their children Helen Hsu (Mark Bewley), Jeany Gorenflo (Nathan Gorenflo), and Judy Hsu (Michael Gilbert); grandchildren: Zoe, Corban, and Braden Bewley; Evan, Chase, and Maya Gorenflo; Samantha and soon-to-be-born “Baby Bean” Gilbert; and a caring community of dear friends and extended family.

Sheng will be missed every day by all those who loved him, but his memory will live on in their hearts.

Graham Funeral Home in Chesapeake, VA is honored to care for the Hsu family. There will be a private family ceremony from 1-3 PM Saturday, January 27 at Graham Funeral Home in Chesapeake, VA.
