Obituary for Richard Lee Seger

Richard Lee Seger, 70, of Chesapeake, went home to be with the Lord on June 24, 2021 after a long, courageous battle with prostate cancer. He passed peacefully with his wife and daughter by his side. He was born in Howell, Michigan on February 6, 1951.

Rick proudly served our country in the U.S. Navy. He retired after 20 years of service, including time aboard the USS America off the coast of Vietnam, and as a P3 Ordinanceman with over 1800 flight hours. After his naval service, he retired from Chesapeake Regional Medical Center as a master locksmith and technician in the Facilities Management Department. Rick also volunteered with Mended Hearts through Sentara Heart Hospital.

Surviving Rick are his loving and devoted wife, Karan Seger; his beautiful daughter, Amber Vrhovac and son-in-law, Russell; and his two adorable granddaughters, Layla and Lauren. He is also survived by his brothers, Glenn, Louis, and Robert Seger, all residing in Florida. Rick leaves behind numerous, extended family members and many great friends.

Rick had a passion for golf, always trying to get that hole-in-one. If he wasn’t golfing, he was either fishing, watching old westerns, reading history books (especially Civil War), tinkering in his garage, woodworking, or traveling. These things brought him so much joy.
Above all else, Rick enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a devoted husband, father, friend, neighbor and most importantly, a loving papaw to his two young granddaughters.

Our family gives special thanks to Dr. Paul Conkling and team; Dr. Robert Given, Dr. Jonathan Philpott, and Dr. Ronald Atwood and staff; for the care they provided that gave Rick many more years with us. A special thank you to Traditions Health and Hospice for the wonderful care given Rick and our family. We especially thank his nurses, Teri and Mike for their continuous care.

He will be laid to rest Tuesday, July 6, 2021, at 2:00 pm at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery located at 5310 Milners Road in Suffolk. Everyone is welcome to attend. Graham Funeral Home, Chesapeake will be caring for arrangements. Condolences may be offered to the family at grahamfuneralhome.com.
