Obituary for Richard "Rick" C. Hinzpeter, Sr.

On Thursday, April 22, 2021, Richard “Rick” Charles Hinzpeter, Sr. , “Do,” passed away at the young age of 71.

Rick was born in Memphis, Tennessee, on August 6, 1949. His family relocated to Virginia Beach and settled in Aragona Village. In 1968, at the age of 19, he enlisted in the Army, serving three tours in Vietnam, earning several commendation medals, including the Bronze Star. Rick began his career at Norfolk Naval shipyard in March of 1974 and retired after 33 years of service as an APS. He was respected, knowledgeable, someone you could always count on, and a mentor to all.
Rick loved his family deeply and was a fiercely loyal friend. Some of his favorites past times included golfing with his brothers-in-law, road trips to Dover, Nascar races, hosting backyard barbeques where he made sure there was good music, great food, and always had a cold beer for anyone that wanted one. He loved the Green Bay Packers and was a hard-core Chicago Cubs fan. He was the Mayor of his neighborhood, had a quick-witted, oftentimes hilariously dry sense of humor. If you saw the infamous “raised Hinzpeter eyebrow”, you knew he was about to say something sarcastic that bring you to tears with laughter. He was a devoted loving husband. To his children, he was the first one they’d call with good news or advice. To his grandchildren, he was a best friend.

Rick is predeceased by his parents, Richard and Annabelle Hinzpeter, and his brother, Gary Hinzpeter. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Elaine; their 3 children, Melissa, Rick, and Amber; his sister, Carol Stout; 5 grandchildren, Alora, Gavin, Cadin, Wade, and Billy. Rick also had a host of in-laws that he considered his sisters and brothers: Della Hinzpeter, Pat Nazzewski, Sandy Vaughan, James Seegers, and his wife Trish, Rick Seegers, and his wife Sandy, and numerous nieces nephews, and extended family that loved him dearly. Rick is also pre-deceased by brothers-in-law Jack Stout, Wally Vaughan, and Ed Nazzewski.

The family will receive friends at Graham Funeral Home, 1112 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake on Thursday, April 29, 2021 from 1-2 p.m. A memorial service to celebrate Rick's life will be held on Thursday, April 29, 2021 at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. For anyone who knew Rick, you know he wasn't stuffy. Guests are asked to honor his spirit by wearing their favorite team apparel or casual wear. Temperatures will be checked upon entering the funeral home and seating is limited.
