Obituary for Richard Lane Nuckols Sr.

Richard Lane Nuckols, Sr., 79, passed away May 9, 2021. Richard was born in Norfolk, Virginia to the late William Henry and Beulah Lane Nuckols. He graduated from Covington High School before enlisting in the US Air Force. In 1964 while with the Air Force, he was the 2nd man on a four-man bobsled team, competing in the World Olympics in San Moritz, Switzerland where he won the bronze medal. After his honorable service, he continued serving the U.S. Government as a firefighter with the Department of Defense before retiring in 1995. Richard’s life was not all work and no play; he was a highly active person. He regularly worked out at the gym and even ran 4 marathons among several other races around the Tidewater area. He was an avid golfer and racquet ball player in his early years, and he loved to dance; but his favorite thing to do was vacationing in Florida with his family. When he was still able, he achieved level 32-degree Scottish Rite Mason in Virginia Beach Lodge #220 AFandAM and was a member at Great Bridge Presbyterian Church.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Janice F. Nuckols; brother, William Nuckols; sons, Richard Lane Nuckols, Jr and his wife Terri; Robert Lee Nuckols and his wife, Samantha and granddaughter, Sadie Paige; step-daughter, Amy King and husband Ronald King; and grandchildren, Ashlyn and Ryder King; step-son, William Dawson and grandchildren Lucas and Zoey Dawson.
