Obituary for Rev. James Reginald Hester III

Rev. James R. “Reggie” Hester III passed away unexpectedly December 19, 2020. Reggie was born in Laurinburg, NC to Bonnie and Jim Hester Jr. in 1966. Reggie attended Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, followed by a Master of Business Administration in 1993.

Ten years into a secular career, Reggie was saved and called to preach while attending Kempsville Baptist Church in Virginia Beach. He went on to enroll at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in 2004 to obtain his Master of Divinity. He pastored DeBaun Memorial Baptist Church in Chesapeake from 2001-2005, and Bethel Baptist Church in Chesapeake from 2005-2014. In February 2014, he served as Southeast Regional Missionary with the Southern Baptist Convention of Virginia. In September of 2015 he served as Transitional Pastor of Pinecrest Baptist Church in Portsmouth and became the full-time Senior Pastor in 2016.

Reggie is survived by the love of his life, Kay Hester, with whom he shared 29 years of marriage. He and Kay have three children, Danielle, Davis, and Ross. Reggie is also survived by his parents, Bonnie and Jim; his brother, Stephen and his wife, Deborah, their children, Caroline and Camille; and many family members and friends.

Graham Funeral Home will be caring for arrangements. Due to COVID-19 restrictions and adhering with social distancing guidelines, a viewing will be held Saturday, December 26, 2020 from 10 - 4 p.m. with a maximum of ten guests at a time. A funeral service will be held Sunday, December 27, 2020 at 2 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church, 1832 Elbow Rd. Chesapeake, VA 23320. The service will be officiated by Dr. Kelly Burris. Reggie will be laid to rest at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery. For the viewing and service, masks must be worn the entire time while in the building and social distancing must be followed. For safety, please limit hugging and handshakes. Seating will be limited in the church.
