Obituary for Philip Ray Farthing

Philip R. Farthing died on June 13, 2021, and was immediately translated from this earthly life to eternal life in Heaven. Phil is survived by his wife of 55 years, Laura McGrew Farthing; his four children: Emily Farthing Carmichael, of Seattle, Washington, Sara Farthing Cartier of Richmond, Andrew Philip Farthing and his wife, Natalie, and Elizabeth Farthing Kiernan and her husband, Logan, of Virginia Beach; eight grandchildren: Mac Camden Cartier of Richmond, Eli Northcott Farthing, Emery Jane Farthing, Easton Wayne Farthing, Jacob Doyle Kiernan, Bowen Philip Kiernan, Connor Lewis Kiernan, and Lee Walker Kiernan, of Virginia Beach, plus a host of caring friends and former law clients.
He was a member of Avalon Hills Bible Church for 10 years and was previously a member of Tabernacle Church of Norfolk for 26 years. A private graveside service will be conducted at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Granby Street, Norfolk. A life celebration and memorial service will be conducted at Tabernacle Church of Norfolk, 7000 Granby Street, Norfolk, on Friday, June 18, 2021 at 11 am.
Phil was a highly decorated veteran of the Vietnam War, having served on the front lines as a United States Army Infantry combat platoon leader. He practiced law in Norfolk for over 45 years and served on numerous boards of Christian organizations throughout his career, including: The Union Mission for more than 40 years, World Team (an overseas church planting missionary organization) for 25 years, and Wycliffe Bible Translators Foundation for 7 years.
Phil deeply loved many organizations across the world involved in Bible translation, and The Union Mission. He and his family request that there be no flowers and that in lieu of flowers all donations in his memory go to either Wycliffe Bible Translators, PO Box 628291, Orlando, Florida 32862-8291, for those who serve around the world translating Scriptures for people who have never had God’s Word in their language, or to The Union Mission, PO Box 3202, Norfolk, Virginia 23514-3203, for those in need locally.
