Obituary for Napoleon Borja Cruz

Napoleon Borja Cruz, 89 years old, passed away on February 2, 2023, surrounded by his family. Napoleon was born on February 5, 1933 in Norzagaray, Bulacan, to the late Judge Raymundo Cruz Sr. and Juana Borja. He was the eldest of 7 children.

Nap graduated from Mapua Institute of Technology in Manila, Philippines with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. He was the top-ranked “top notcher” board examinee in the whole country when he took the Philippines licensing board examination for Mechanical Engineers in 1959. For more than 25 years, Nap traveled all over the world as a field engineer and site manager for a cement and mining company.

Over the years, Nap enjoyed playing golf, pelota and bowling. He loved playing a good game of poker and mahjong with his friends. He loved music. He was a talented amateur ballroom dancer and sang his favorite tunes when he thought no one was listening. He enjoyed reading different genres, from the entire bible to the complete Harry Potter book series.

During his retirement, Nap called himself a home investor. He invested in equity markets primarily to benefit his heirs and charities. His advice to his grandchildren: Invest Early.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Corazon (retired physician); his children, Judith and Jun Lancaon, Celia and KC Dunham, Norman and Nini Cruz and Noel Cruz; his grandchildren, Stephanie and Ron Strulic, April Cruz, Kristi Cruz, Brandon Cruz, Lorraine Lancaon, Rebecca Lancaon and Jorge Gonzalez, Leigh Lancaon, Jillian Cruz, Corina Cruz and Claudia Dunham; his great grandchildren, Brad, Ellie, Andrew, Brandon, Hunter, Mia, Ethan, Malaya, Cruz, Zander, Ozeo, Ever, Hadden, Hailey, Isabella and Jorge Ramon; his sisters Imelda Cruz and Helen Cipriano; his best friends Larry and Carolyn Cruz and Ibarra Castro.

Nap was predeceased in death by his children, Napoleon Cruz Jr., Dr. Herminia Cruz and Nathan Cruz; his siblings, Dr. Lina Ramos, Josephine Tuazon, Raymundo “Boy” Cruz Jr. and Rhodora Pascual.

The family will receive friends and family members at Graham Funeral Home, 1112 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake, Virginia on Thursday, February 9, 2023, from 6-8 pm. Celebration mass will be held at St. Mark’s Catholic Church at 1505 Kempsville Road, Virginia Beach, Virginia on February 11, 2023 at 11 am, to be officiated by Rev. Fr. Anthony Mpungu.
