Obituary for Melvin Lee Armstrong

Melvin Lee Armstrong passed away October 22, 2018. Melvin was born in Pasquotank County, N.C. in 1925. He was the son of the late Lillian H. Armstrong and Ottis L. Armstrong. Besides his parents he was preceded by his first wife, Frances W. Armstrong and brother, Ottis L. “Lloyd” Armstrong. He lived in Great Bridge for the last 35 years and was a member of Centerville Baptist Church. Melvin was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in the latter stages of WWII. He worked as an aircraft mechanic, aircraft inspector and retired as an aircraft line supervisor from the Naval Air Rework Facility at Norfolk Naval Base in 1980. Melvin enjoyed travel and volunteering. He volunteered as a tax prepare for the elderly for 16 years and Meals on Wheels for 25 years. Melvin was an avid woodworker, carpenter and overall general handyman.
Left a cherished memory is his wife, Annie E. Armstrong; sons, Robert F. Armstrong, Richard E. Armstrong and his wife, Patricia and Roy L. Armstrong; stepchildren, Carol C. Mayo and her husband, Mike, Nanette C. Cartwright and her husband, Ray, and William H. Cartwright, III and his wife, Terri; step- grandchildren, Jeff Mayo, Kevin Cartwright and his wife, Natalie, William “Bud” Cartwright and William “Will” Cartwright, IV and his wife, Rachel; great-grandchild, Brantley Cartwright; and other family and friends.
A heartfelt thanks is extended to the staff at Commonwealth Senior Living at Georgian Manor and the Hospice staff at Westminster Canterbury for the care provided to Melvin over the past 14 months.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 3, 2018 from 11 -12 noon at Centerville Baptist Church, 908 S. Centerville Trnpk, Chesapeake. A Memorial service will begin at noon at the church with Rev. Kevin Ritter officiating. At the request of the family memorial donations may be made in his memory to the Centerville Baptist Church Cornerstone fund or to the Alzheimer's Association Southeastern Virginia Chapter at www.alz.org/seva.
