Obituary for Matthew Scott Philbrick

Matthew Scott Philbrick, 33, passed away October 14, 2021. Matthew was born in Chesapeake, Virginia to Scott and Christine Philbrick. Left to cherish his memory are his father, Scott Philbrick (Barbara) and mother, Christine Philbrick (Steven); paternal grandfather, John Leffler; maternal grandparents, Leslie and Tunisia Matthews; aunts, Patricia Banks (Charles), Amy Penner (Jeff), Emily Williams (Scott); uncle, Lawrence Matthews (Adrienne); cousins, Steven, Amanda, David, Heather, Molly, Madison, Trevor, Lexi, Nolan, Christina, Melissa, Nathan, Abi, Logan, Arianna, Declan, and Charlie; and a host of other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Joyce Philbrick Leffler and grandfather, Roland C. Philbrick.

Matthew had a very infectious personality that enabled him to have a host of friends - Stephanie Flitton, Corey McCrae, Miles Bodamer, Micah Cahoon, Darren Payne, Danny Cash, Melissa Frye, Tommy King, Steven Irving, and Jerrod Denning to mention just a few who will definitely miss his funny sense of humor, good heart and nature. Matthew was always the life of the party and was very happy to share his time with others. He really enjoyed living life to the fullest. He loved hanging out with family and friends.

One of his well known achievements was his skill and enthusiasm for arm wrestling which he learned from his dad. He would wrestle anybody, at any time and usually win even though it took many years of practice to beat his dad. He loved to hunt, fish, camp and go 4 wheeling which was also learned from the time he spent with his dad in nature.

Matthew enjoyed dancing which he learned at very young age. He started tap dancing lessons when he was only 3 years old that included recitals. At one of his recitals he was dressed as a cowboy and he slipped over his horse which made it much more entertaining. He had the audience rolling with laughter even at that age.

Matthew's great sense of humor came from his love of Jerry Seinfeld, Jim Carey and Meryl Streep especially her morbid punch line, "the dingo's got my baby!". Matthew also enjoyed watching movies and had some favorite television shows - The Sopranos and The Walking Dead. He enjoyed these shows so much that at one point in his life he had a weekly date night with Stephanie, Kenney and Sean to get together to watch the shows no matter what else was going on in their lives.

Matthew enjoyed swimming and trips to the beach with his Mom. When Matthew wanted to do something nothing could stop him. At one of the OBX trips he wanted to go swimming and it was Adult Swim or Water Aerobics ONLY but he was not going to be deterred and he persuaded his buddies Micah, Cory, and Darren to join the Senior Ladies (80 and above) to do water aerobics. His Mom found him and his buddies bouncing up and down in the pool having the best time of their lives.

Matthew's other interests included playing pool and watching football. He was quite the pool shark and was well known for his ability to "run the table"!. You did not want to place any money that you could not afford to loose against him. He and his buddy Miles invented their own pool competition and anyone that hung out at the Mount Pleasant house was expected to participate in the competition. Matt also loved watching professional football and his favorite team was Washington formerly known as the Red Skins. This love of football made for much excitement when watching the Cowboys versus the Red Skins with his Uncle Chuck! Not only did Matthew love watching football, but he loved to play football and was very aggressive with his tackling. A hit from Matthew would cause a person to see stars!

Matthew is truly missed!
