Obituary for Mary Degenhardt Sampson

Mary Degenhardt Sampson passed away on Tuesday, March 2, 2021 at the age of 77. Mary was born on November 13, 1943 in Norfolk, Virginia to the late Richard and Alice (Crump) Degenhardt. She was the oldest of four children, sisters Anna Degenhardt and Rose Hutton and brother Richard Degenhardt, Jr. On October 8, 1965, she married Andrew Edward Sampson, who preceded her in death in June 2010. She was the devoted mother and grandmother of four beautiful children, twelve grandchildren, and one great-grandson.
Mary had many hobbies and talents. She loved to sew, cross stitch, and crochet, skills that she taught her daughter, Kim. Her favorite flower was the African violet and she always had a full garden of them in her home. She passed on her love of flowers to her daughter, Heather. Mary was a loving wife and mother. She spent many years volunteering as room mom, helping out at Bingo night, and going in to help sell ice cream at Christ the King Catholic School. She was also a Girl Scout leader and an assistant soccer coach.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and husband. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Heather and Robert Langston, Hillary and Adam Blumberg, Kimberley and Filip Heist, and Andrew Sampson II. She is also survived by her twelve grandchildren: Emily Schultz, Rebecca Langston, Daniel Langston, Jacob Langston, Samuel Langston, Lily Langston, Colby Heist, Connor Heist, Aspen Heist, Jack Grimm, Kate Grimm, and Alex Blumberg. She is also survived by her great-grandson, Matthew Schultz.
Mary will always be remembered for her loving and giving spirit. She had a deep love for her children and grandchildren and loved every minute she got to spend with them. She loved to tell jokes that made her laugh so hard, she couldn’t get the words out. The whole room would be laughing with her- not at the joke, but because of her infectious laugh. She didn’t tell jokes often, but they were always memorable.
A graveside service to celebrate her life will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 5, 2021 at Colonial Grove Memorial Park, 3445 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach. Please visit her webpage at www.grahamfuneralhome.com to leave a note of condolence to her family.
