Obituary for Marvin Lee Bright

Marvin Lee Bright, 61, of Newtown Road, known to family and friends as “Boogie Down” was called to his eternal heavenly home on Wednesday, October 14, 2020. Marvin was born to the late Willie M. “Buddy” Bright and to Mahalie V. Spruill Mullen.

Marvin was a member of Christian Home Baptist Church in Moyock, NC. He began working at the Ford Motor Company Norfolk Assembly Plant in 1978. He retired after 30 years of service when the plant shut down. From there he returned to his love for driving trucks. He worked in spite of the pain to provide for his family almost to the end of his time spent on Earth.

Marvin was a loving and giving person. He had a huge heart and would do anything for his family and friends. Marvin raised another man’s children like they were his flesh and blood, he overcame drug addiction, and quit a cigarette smoking habit cold turkey. Marvin opened his home to anyone in need, fed many people and didn’t know a stranger. Marvin was known for his love of cookouts and celebrations and loved to invite the whole town. Watching others have a good time filled his heart and soul. To some he may have been a regular man but to his wife and children he was their king. He will forever be their hero.

He was predeceased by his son, Marvin V. “Boonk” Harris, sister, Bridget Marie Bright, aunt, Jannie Spruill Harvey, uncle, William “Bud” Spruill, Jr, step-father Jerry Mullen, father-in-law, Joe Mendiola, and grandfather, William Fertie Spruill Senior.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his loving wife, Rebecca “Becky” Bright; children, Carlos Noriega (Melanie), Rita Estrada (Vincent), Steven Noriega, Tina Noriega (Cartrell) and special loved one, Latoiya O’Brien (Steve); ten grandchildren; one great grandchild; one sister, Camilla “June” Sutton (David); one brother, Dexter “Dex” Bright; three aunts, Mary Broome, Marion Walston, and Marcise Spruill; two uncles, John Henry Spruill (Gwendolyn) and Roy Harvey (Sara); a mother-in-law, Helen Mendiola; four sister-in-laws, Beverly Dunton, Consuello Torrez (Antonio), Grace Mendiola and Theresa Mendiola; two brother-in-laws, Joe Mendiola (Doreen) and Daniel Mendiola (Tammy); and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. He will truly be remembered by many.

The family will receive friends on Monday, October 19, 2020 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Graham Funeral Home, 1112 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake, VA 23320. A service to celebrate his life will be held on Tuesday, October 20, 2020 at 11 a.m. at Christian Home Baptist Church, Moyock, NC with Pastor Ronnie M. Culley I, Officiating. He will be laid to rest in the church cemetery. Please visit www.grahamfuneralhome.com to leave a condolence to the family.
