Obituary for Linwood Linus Nelms Jr.

Linwood Linus Nelms Jr., 81, peacefully passed away January 8, 2023 in Chesapeake, Virginia. Linwood was born to the late Linwood, Sr. and Ruby Taylor Nelms. He was a graduate of the 1959 class of Oscar F Smith High School in South Norfolk. After graduating from Old Dominion University , he pursued a lifelong passion in banking and finance. Beginning his career at United Virginia Bank as an auditor, he then became a commercial loan officer at the Bank of Hampton Roads. Linwood held the position of Senior Vice President at Resource Bank before retiring. First and foremost Linwood was a family man who loved spending time with family. Vacations and attending sports events were a top favorite pastime. He was known as a coach and a mentor. Southside Baptist Church was his church home where he was a deacon and a teacher. Linwood's love for Chesapeake and the community showed in the time he put forth for the betterment of the city. The clubs and organizations he was involved in are wide ranging and numerous. A few are : South Norfolk Civic League Co-Founder, 1997-1998 Chesapeake Hospital Authority Chairman, Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce board member, South Norfolk Masonic Lodge #339, Khedive Provost Guard, ODU Research Foundation Board member, Chesapeake Jubilee 1995 Chairman, Former Board of Commissioners Chairman Chesapeake Redevelopment and Housing Authority, and Founding Director Chesapeake Sports Club.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 59 years, Nora Nelms of Chesapeake, daughter, Jennifer Seymour and husband, Scott Seymour, and son, Chris Nelms and wife, Courtney Nelms; three grandchildren, Alexander Seymour, Ashley Seymour, Christopher Nelms all of Virginia Beach.

A viewing will be held at Graham Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 1112 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake, on Monday, January 16, 2023 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. A service to celebrate his life will be held on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, at 12 noon at the funeral home.
