Obituary for Larry Garth Bain

There once was a man named Larry Garth Bain, who was born on December 22, 1938, in Springfield, Missouri, and was raised on a small farm in a small town named Fairgrove. His parents were the late William F. and Helen Culp Bain. Larry was the first of eleven children to be born. He had 7 brothers, Millard, Jerry, Richard, Steven, Ross, Russell, and his little brother Bill; and 3 sisters, Wynona, Susan, and his baby sister Cheryl. He loved his family with all of his heart and soul during every moment of his 83 years on this earth. His childhood stories will live on forever in our hearts.

Larry joined the U.S. Navy in August, 1957 and served his country faithfully until he retired in 1976. During his time in the navy, he received the Good Conduct Medal and National Defense Service Medal, and was a Navy Memorial Plank Owner. He served on the Alamo, Suribachi, Neosho, USS Pelias, USS Bache, USS Josephus Daniels, Hammerberg, Joseph Hewes, Tidewater and the Sellers, DDG11. He was a member of the American Legion and the Fleet Reserve Association, and the NRA. He was very proud of his time on every ship and then enjoyed all of the ship reunions that he could attend upon his retirement. He is recognized in the Navy Memorial Log, NavyMemorial.org, and encouraged that all who served their country add their name. He made many lifelong friendships and his loyalty and love for his fellow shipmates will live on forever.

Larry continued his service as a Marine Mechanic at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard for another 25 years. Again, he made many lifelong friends at the Shipyard. Even after he retired in 2000, he continued to meet every year with his friend's from his old "shop". He left his beef jerky and brown rice recipes for all of his friends that he worked with at the Shipyard. He always had a smile whenever his friends would come and visit him during the past few years. We will continue to laugh at all of the funny stories that he told us which will probably live on during talks at the shop reunion's in the future.

Larry married the love of his life in 1962, Lilia Tirado Bain. They spent 46 years building a life together and raising their only daughter, Rhonda L. Bain-White, and with additional family (Angela Bain, Russell Bain, Robin Womeldorf, Gregorio Tirado, and Christy Buchanan). Although they only had one child, they kept their house full of friends and family whenever possible. They were always together and loved to travel, whether it be to visit family in Missouri/Oklahoma, driving to Maine to get Lobsters, weekend trips to Atlantic City, Italy to get Gucci Purses, or just to Moorehead City to pick up shrimp from the boat for their friends. They were completely devoted to each other and their memory of love, laughter and giving will live on in all of those who were touched by them. Larry and Lily are together again.

Larry spent the last years of his life with his daughter, Rhonda and son-in-law Norman White, beloved grandchildren that he was so proud of, Maya Lilia White, Evan Bain White, Haley Ann Olson and great-grandson, Hayden Michael Marshall. Larry continued to touch many people's lives throughout the end of his own. He and his family are forever grateful to the caregivers and friends that helped him through his health struggles near the end. Larry was surrounded by those who loved him when he took the hand of God and was lifted peacefully away from this earth on January 4, 2022. He will always be with us in a salty sailor's joke, the wink as you walk by; the good advice you didn't ask for; the obvious answer, and the forever UNCONDITIONAL LOVE that he presented throughout his amazing and full life. He will still be with us in the wind, the salty air, and our hearts...now and forever. We love you Larry, Dad and PawPaw.
