Lacy Owen Ridgeway, 93, peacefully passed away on Monday, August 10, 2020 at Virginia Beach General Hospital. He was surrounded by his family when the Lord called him home. Lacy was born on March 10, 1927 in rural Pittsylvania County, VA to the late Robert & Dora White Ridgeway. Independent from a young age, Lacy moved to Norfolk, VA as a teenager and enlisted in the Navy. He honorably served his country during WWII on the Pacific front. After the War, Lacy turned to business and became the epitome of entrepreneur. He transformed Colonial Bedding in Norfolk, VA from a struggling company into a thriving enterprise known for its quality, commitment and exceptional customer service. At its peak, Colonial Bedding employed over 25 workers and proudly served customers in the Hampton Roads area for over 50 years. Lacy embodied hard work, honesty and determination. He was a self made man and willed the life he earned.

Lacy's personal interests varied, but none came before the love he had for his wife, his family, and his Lord. Lacy was always "dressed to the nines" and could often be found working in the yard or quietly reading and reflecting on the Lord's Word in the Bible. Lacy also had an unparalleled love for cars. Over the course of his life, he collected various luxury cars and he thoroughly enjoyed the art of landing a good deal. In fact, he routinely stopped by dealerships just to "talk shop." Most people remember Lacy for his storytelling. The detail and intensity with which he told stories was truly unrivaled. Even late into his years, Lacy could captivate an audience.

Lacy was father to two children. Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife of 49 years, Elizabeth "Betty" Ridgeway; his daughter, Sherry Ann (Wayne); his grandson, Rob (Kate), his granddaughter, Diane (Josh); brother, Curtis Doss (Nancy); and his 6 great grandchildren.

The family invites friends to pay respects on Thursday, August 13, 2020 from 10am - 4pm at Graham Funeral Home, 1112 Kempsville Rd. Chesapeake. Out of consideration for current health concerns the funeral ceremony will be held for family only on Friday, August 14, 2020 at Graham Funeral Home at 11am with Dr. James Baker officiating. The family invites you to visit to view the service online in real time, and to leave a condolence for the family.

My prayers and thoughts are with the Ridgeway family at this difficult time. I first met Lacy when I spent the night at the Ridgeways with who became a lifelong friend, his daughter Sherry. Lacy and Betty always opened their home and hearts to me. I don’t forget that if not for them, I may not have finished college. I’ve spent my life working in charitable organizations, hoping to live up to that generosity. Lacy was such a vibrant and unforgettable person. May you find comfort now in the memories of his full life.
