Obituary for Joseph Patrick Devlin

Joseph P. Devlin, (Joe) passed away at the University of North Carolina Cancer Hospital on Saturday April 24, 2021. Born in New Bedford, Massachusetts to Joseph and the late Marie Devlin. He is survived by his sister, Ann-Marie; his wife, Kimberly; their children, Jeremy, Devyn, Ryan, Joseph, and Connor;, his brother-in law, Manny; his daughter-in-law, Cassandra; grandchildren, Aelynn, Annaliese, and Jeremiah; his niece, Nina, and nephew, Manuel.

Joe was a model example of sacrifice and dedication to family and country. He approached life with unending kindness and wit, always seeking to make those laugh around him, even through his most difficult journey. A self-described rock-nerd, Joe was very fond of classic rock, Dr. Who, Star Wars and his all-time favorite show was Star Trek. He had a passion for cooking, always owned the grill during family gatherings, and leaves behind the legacy of what unconditional love for family means.

Joe was also a part of another family, the United States Navy. He enlisted as an IT, or Information Systems Technician, in February of 1996. He was a veteran of the Global War on Terror and Operation Enduring Freedom. He proudly served on the U.S.S Blue-ridge, U.S.S KittyHawk, and the U.S.S Enterprise, before medically retiring as a First Class Petty Officer in 2013. He found an immense pride in his service with his many brothers and sisters in arms, often fondly recalling various sea stories to the family.

We will miss him as time wears on. We’ll miss those witty remarks and wise cracks. We’ll miss that twinkle in his eye and chuckle that was contagious. The impact that he had on all those around him will never be forgotten. We celebrate him and will cherish his memory always.

"So you will understand when I say, 'Death is that state in which one exists only in the memory of others… which is why it is not an end.' No goodbyes. Just good memories. Hailing frequencies closed, sir." -Star Trek
