John Leslie Butler, 95, of 312 Chowan Trail, Edenton, NC, went to be with the Lord Sunday, May 30, 2021. A loving son, father, grandfather and friend to many, Mr. Butler was born in Suffolk, VA on March 17, 1926, and was the youngest of seven sons and two daughters born to the late Annie Armstrong and Jethro Thomas Butler. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by all his siblings, and his wife Mary Ruth Butler. Surviving is his son, David L. Butler (wife Gina) of Edenton, NC; a stepdaughter, Donna Ray Hodges of Chesapeake VA; his grandson, Troy D. Butler (fiancée Loren Vann) of Chesapeake VA; his step grandchildren, William Brooks (wife Kristin) City of Bohannon, VA, and Lee Brooks (wife Ashley) of Chesapeake VA; along with three great grandchildren, Nolan, Elijah, and Burton.
He was a faithful member of Faith Fellowship Baptist Church in Tyner, NC. John served in the United States Marine Corps and was a veteran of World War II serving his Country with the 25th Marines, 4th Marine Division, 1st Battalion of Company A landing with the first wave of Marines on the Island of Iwo Jima. He also served with the Norfolk City Fire Department protecting his community and retiring as Fire Captain after 36 years of dedicated service.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 7th, at 11:00 am at Faith Fellowship Baptist Church 3500 Virginia Rd, Tyner, NC with Pastor David A. Crumpler officiating. Friends may visit with the family at 312 Chowan Trail, Edenton, NC. He will be laid to rest at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Virginia State Veterans Cemetery with military and fire honors.
