Obituary for James Walter "Jimmy" Friend

James Walter (Jimmy) Friend, 84, died Tuesday July 14th in a Virginia Beach hospital. He was born on May 27th 1936 to the late Walter Friend and India Diggs Friend. He is survived by his wife of 25
years Doris Friend, five daughters Joan Harris, Mary "Tami" Friend, Laura Norman, Amie Shaw and her spouse James and Susan Friend, eleven grandchildren Scott (Christin) Harris, Chelsea McCann, Lindsay (Tyler) Allgood, David (Brittney) Freeman, Tyler Burrow, Caleb Norman, Steven Richard, Jason Shaw (Kenn Underhill), Nicholas Shaw, Audrey Brockman, Theron Brown and eight great grandchildren. After a long career with the City of Norfolk as a Civil Engineer he retired in 1996. He was active in his community including a three-year stint as the Executive Director of the USTS Bud Light Triathlon held in Norfolk. He enjoyed bowling which is how he met his beloved wife Doris. He also enjoyed woodworking, golf, crossword puzzles, traveling in his camper with his wife, and spending time with his family. A Celebration of Life will be held Thursday July 23rd at 1:00 p.m. at Graham Funeral Home, 1112 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake, VA 23320. Afterwards there will be a gathering at the home of his daughter, Amie Shaw; please contact the family for directions.
