Obituary for James McLeod "Jim" Bornman

James McLeod Bornman, 71, passed away on December 10th. unexpectedly at Sentara Norfolk General VICU with his family by his side. He was born at Fort McPherson, Atlanta, GA to the late Lt. Col. James Alfred and Anna Louise Bornman. “Jim” was a graduate of Mississippi State with a degree in Ornamental Horticulture. He served his country in the United States Navy and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. Known for his vast intellect, his incredibly giving spirit and as a “Jack of All Trades”, he also served as a Lighting Technician at CBN, in the York County Fire Department and lastly as a Disability Assistant in service to a dedicated Certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapist and her service dog.

To have known “Jim” meant you were always being offered a piece of his vast knowledge. Knowing him also meant you could not escape his unconditional acceptance and loyalty to you, whether just an acquaintance or a cherished friend. He adored his family. His dearest friend and former wife, Carol, was the absolute love of his life and the center of his adoration for 34 years. He could not have loved his step-daughter more faithfully or supported she and her husband more completely. He so beautifully and intentionally cherished his only granddaughter, Samantha, the apple of his eye. The most profound and transformative relationship Jim had though, was with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. That was his greatest gift to us all.

He leaves behind his loving former wife and life-long companion, Carol Bornman; step- daughter, Sarah Seiler and her husband, Scott Seiler and his adoring granddaughter, Samantha Seiler; his niece, Helen and her husband, Rusty and nephew, Joshua. He was also predeceased by his sister, Louise Bornman Johnson and brother, William Bornman.

The family will hold a service in the spring to honor Jim; date and time to be determined. Given Jim’s love of the Jewish faith, the Principle Approach to Christian education and horses, in lieu of flowers to the family, donations in his memory may be made to the Jerusalem Prayer Team International, The Foundation for American Christian Education (F.A.C.E.) or the Equi-Kids Therapeutic Riding Program.
