Obituary for Helen Elizabeth Lane

Helen Elizabeth Lane, 91, passed away on Tuesday, April 12, 2022. She was born in Glade Spring, Virginia to the late James N. and Josephine Norris Stovall. Besides her parents, she was also preceded by her first husband, Howard W. Sweet, Sr. and second husband, Amos Woodrow Lane.Helen worked at Sears in Portsmouth and retired after 25 years. She was a member of Blackwater Baptist Church, the Senior Center of Virginia Beach, and past president of the Dolphinettes Fishing Club; an all women fishing team, founded in 1966. She participated in many tournaments in Cape Hatteras. Helen enjoyed many things in life. Her favorite thing to do was baking and cooking for her family and friends. She loved to dance, play cards, gardening, sports, fishing and traveling. Helen was a thoughtful woman, always calling to see how you were doing or sending a heartfelt note to let you know she was thinking of you. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
Left to cherish her memory are her beloved children, Howard W. “Woody” Sweet Jr. (Cindy); Linda S. Braaten (Bob), Karen S. Crowder (Glenn); brother, Howard Stovall (Judy); four grandchildren, Ryan, Laura (Tayloe), Kelly and Austin; three great grandchildren, James, Max and Eddie; stepchildren, Edgar W. Lane (Debbie), Preston L. Lane (Theresa) Gloria Alston, Bonny F. Sims.
The family would like to thank those who provided extra special care to our Mom over the last year.
The family is inviting friends Friday, April 15, 2022, from 10am to 12pm at Graham Funeral Home, 1112 Kempsville Rd. Chesapeake. A service to celebrate her life will begin at 12pm. She will be laid to rest in Olive Branch Cemetery. Please consider a memorial donation in Helen's honor to a charity of your choosing.
