Obituary for Gail Francis Layton

Gail F. Layton, 88, passed away peacefully in the presence of his wife of 52 years, Mary Anna Layton, on August 20, 2021 in Chesapeake, Virginia.

Born January 10, 1933 in Wilmington DE, he was the son of Gail F. Layton Sr. and Sophie (Orlowski) Layton. He went to St. Mary’s Elementary School and graduated in 1952 from Salesianum Catholic School and in Wilmington, DE, where later he was an employee at Almart/J.B. Hunter. Moving to Chesapeake, VA in 1969 he transferred to Almart/J.B. Hunter store (where his employees nicknamed him Fred) at Military Circle Mall, he also worked for Zayre and Walmart. Gail eventually retired from Walmart at the age of 80 years old.

He belonged to St. Stephens Martyr Church in Chesapeake Va.

Gail will be remembered for the countless stories of his earlier days; he was kind to everyone, had a great sense of humor, and loved watching the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles. He especially liked to dine at Olive Garden and order their spaghetti and meatballs. He also enjoyed sharing Philadelphia cuisine at Lews Hot Dog in Norfolk, VA along with subs and cheesesteaks from Philly Style Steaks and Subs on Tidewater Dr. with friends and family.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Anna Layton, two sons, Daniel and Donald, and a daughter Gail. He had nine grandchildren Daniel, Melanie, Eric, Matthew, Ariana, Alex and Keaven, Kyle and Travis and great grandchildren Garrett, Andrew, Caleb, Joshua, Max, Eily, Leo, Evelyn, Vincent, Acadia Annorah and James.

He will be interned at Cathedral Cemetery 2400 Lancaster Ave.in Wilmington Delaware.
