Eugene “Gene” Willard Klemp Sr., 83, passed away July 1, 2023. Gene was born in Oak Park, Illinois to the late Richard Peter Klemp and Emma Hermenia Johanna Augusta Wunnecke Klemp. Besides his parents he was also predeceased by his siblings, Harland, Lois, and Richard; and his grandson, Noah Mosley.
He served his country faithfully in the U.S. Army, which is how he arrived in Virginia. He asked for orders to California, Germany, or Chicago: he was sent to the Deep Creek Nike Missile Site in what was then Norfolk County. He subsequently served his community, working for and retiring from the Chesapeake Police Department, from the day it became a city, January 1, 1963. After he retired, he worked many more years as a DX driver for Checkered Flag Automotive. He was a member of the Great Bridge Masonic Lodge #257, Lake Drummond Masonic Lodge #178, A.F. and A.M., Fraternal Order of Police #9, Chesapeake Shrine Club, Khedive Temple, Scottish Rite, Police Association of Virginia, Southern Police Institute Alumni Association, NC/VA Law Enforcement Association, and was a Past Associate Bethel Guardian Bethel #11, International Order of Job’s Daughters. He was also a graduate of the 55th AOC, University of Louisville, Southern Police Institute.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, of 60 years, Mary McCoy Klemp; two daughters, Martha Klemp, Cynthia Klemp Mosley (Keith); son Eugene “Bud” Willard Klemp Jr (Allison); two granddaughters, Tristin Brook Mosley Ellis (Chris), Caroline Elizabeth Klemp; grandson, William David Klemp; great-granddaughter, Kinlee Elizabeth McClintock; great-grandson Jace Liam Ellis; several in-laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
The family would like to thank Dr. Zahan Zev at Churchland Internal Medicine, Michelle and Chris at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center Interventional Radiology and the CenterWell Nurses, Therapists and Aides for Gene’s care during his illness.
The family will receive friends at Graham Funeral Home, 1112 Kempsville Rd. Chesapeake on Tuesday, July 11, 2023 from 6-8pm. A graveside service will be held in Albert G.
