Obituary for Ernest Stephen Sorady

Ernest (“Ernie”) Sorady passed away peacefully on December 25, 2022. Ernie was born in Franklin Square, NY and grew up in Brooklyn, NY. He spent many years in Medford, NY and Port St. Lucie, FL before moving to Virginia Beach, VA. He met the love of his life, Rosemary (“Rosie”) Sorady, when they were teenagers and they enjoyed 59 years of marriage before her passing in 2012. They were reunited on their favorite holiday.

Ernie served in the US Navy and was a veteran of the Korean War. Following his service, he worked as a bayman and retired from the Patchogue-Medford School District in 1996. Ernie treated everyone like family and went to great lengths to make sure everyone in his company was cared for by way of compliments, cooking, small gifts, and lots of hugs and kisses. Notoriously, if you were in his house when the bell rang on Sunday morning, you couldn’t miss the smell of breakfast cooking.

Ernie was the son of Anne and Ernest Sorady and brother of Jack Sorady – all predeceased. He was also predeceased by his beloved son-in-law, Jeff Fisher who assuredly met him at the golden gates with a big hug and the iron finger.

Family meant everything to Ernie and Rosie and they were blessed with six children, Ernest “Skip” (Joanne) of Shohola, PA; Danny (Cathy) of Virginia Beach, VA; Donna (Jeff) Fisher of Islip, NY; Kevin (Debbie) of Westhampton, NY; Thomas (Ada) of Santa Monica, CA and John (Karen) of Troy, NY; 15 grandchildren, Paul, Heather (Jack) Nicholson, Ashley (Chuck) Moyer, Ellyse (Daylan) Howell, Megan (Tim) Robinson, Katie, Preston (Meredith) Fisher, Cecilia Conaghan, Laura (Zach) McKenzie, Stephanie (Andrew) Iverson, Quinn, Erin, Collin, Tommy and Sophia; 18 great-grandchildren, Kylee Sorady; Ethan and Ameila Nicholson; Brooklyn and Charlie Moyer; Jake and Charlotte Howell; Stella, Brody and Evie Robinson; Theo, Eloise and Charlie Fisher; Ava and Jay Conaghan; and Mikayla, Jackson and Hunter McKenzie; and numerous much loved cousins, nieces and nephews.

A lifelong supporter of New York sports, Ernie would appreciate you rooting for the New York Giants as they play on Sunday.

The family would like to thank all the staff at Princess Anne Rehabilitation Center and Sentara-Princess Anne Health Care System for their outstanding care and support.

Visitors will be received at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church (3314 Sandra Lane, Virginia Beach) on Friday, December 30th, starting at 10:00 am, immediately followed by a funeral mass at 11:00 am. A private interment will follow at a later date.
