Obituary for David Eugene Lietz

David Eugene Lietz, 79 of Chesapeake, Virginia went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 22, 2021. David was born September 22, 1941, in Mine La Motte, Missouri, to the late Harry Lietz and Ruby L. Ratcliff. Preceding him in death are his wife of 60 years, Earlene Laveta (Dickey) Lietz, his brothers Jerry Lietz and Charles Lietz and sister Velma (Lietz) Williams.

David, the third child of four, started his journey with the United States Navy in 1958, throughout which he served on several different ships. A few he served on are the USS Prichett, a Fletcher Class Destroyer, and the USS Lawrence, a Charles F. Adams class guided missle destroyer. While serving in the Navy David held different titles such as Radarman, Boatwain’s Mate and Chief Electronic Warfare Technician.

David and his wife Earlene lived wherever his naval career took them and settled in Farmington, Missouri when he retired from the U.S. Navy in 1978. In 1985 David and Earlene moved back to Virginia when he was called back into the Navy for an additional three years where he served on the USS McCandless which was his final ship and once again he retired from the Navy in 1988. He and Earlene decided to settle in Chesapeake, Va to live near their children and grandchildren where their family has continued to grow throughout the years. In 1989 David went to work for the U.S. Postal Service in Norfolk, Virginia and retired in 2019 after 30 years with the Post Office. Throughout his life he enjoyed bowling, fishing and spending time with his family.

Left behind to cherish David’s memory are his five children, Earl E. Lietz (Ann), Teresa D. Cribb (William), Patricia J. McCormic (Paul), Robert N. Lietz (Laura) and David E.R. Lietz, all who live in the Deep Creek area of Chesapeake, Virginia; Nine grandchildren, Christian, Bobbie, Melinda, Brenda, Jeremiah, Melissa, Brianna, Brandon, and Justin: Nine great grandchildren, Sophia, Kinsley, Lucca, Gavin, Ronin, Corinne, Connor, Elliana and Maddox; David is also survived by many Nieces and Nephews and a host of relatives and friends who know him as Grandpa.

The family will receive friends for viewing at Graham Funeral Home, 1112 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake, Va., 23320 on Wednesday, June 30, 2021, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held at Graham Funeral Home on Thursday, July 1, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. followed by interment in The Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veteran's Cemetery, 5310 Milners Road, Suffolk, Va. 23434. In lieu of flowers the family ask that donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
