Obituary for Cynthia Olga Lingo Burwell

On Sunday, January 12, 2020, Cynthia Burwell, a woman after God’s own heart was called to be with her Maker in Paradise. Cynthia was born on December 18, 1954 to the late Harold Lingo and the late Ruth Bouldin Lingo Samuel. After her parents divorced, her mother later remarried the late Marion C. Samuel, who served as a father figure for most of her life, and helped her mother raise her to become a Godly woman.

Cynthia graduated from Bethel High School (Hampton, VA) in 1972 where she was the first African American majorette. During her summers in high school she attended majorette camps, and was an expert at twirling fire batons. She then attended Hampton Institute (Hampton University) where she was selected Miss ROTC and graduated with a degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology in 1976.

Cynthia was an excellent student and was able to obtain a scholarship to the University of Cincinnati. With much hard work and determination, she graduated with a Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology, and began her career as a Speech Pathologist for Sentara Enterprises (Norfolk, VA).

In 1979 she fell in love with Wesley Burwell, and they married later that year. From that union they were blessed to have two children, Martin and Lauren. Cynthia enjoyed having fun, dancing, quilting, calligraphy and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She also volunteered with the Salvation Army, led a Bible Studies in her home, and was active with the Women’s Ministry at Hope Church.

A few years ago, God laid upon her heart to write a children’s book about the Holy Spirit. As a result of that calling, she published a book in 2018 called “The Super Duper Supernatural Warriors” (which is currently available on Amazon). Cynthia understood the importance of God’s faithfulness when things are difficult and to continue to stand firm on His promises.
