Obituary for Cecelia Shaw Rochevot

Cecelia Shaw Rochevot passed away surrounded by loving family on May 28, 2022.
Cecelia was born the third of four children to Frank B. and Vera Fitzpatrick Shaw on August 14, 1956, in Norfolk, VA. She enjoyed an idyllic Irish-Catholic upbringing.

Cecelia was a graduate of Norfolk Catholic High School. She went on to earn an undergraduate degree in special education from Old Dominion University and a graduate degree in educational leadership from George Washington University.

Cecelia worked with special needs children in Virginia Beach City Public Schools for 10 years and at Southeastern Cooperative Educational Programs (SECEP) for another 20 years as Assistant Director. She was devoted to ensuring all children had the best opportunity for an independent and productive life. She also enjoyed building meaningful relationships with her staff and guiding them throughout their professional careers to reach their fullest potential, even if it meant doing her best Tina Turner impersonation.

During retirement Cecelia (Ceil) enjoyed learning to knit. Her beautiful handmade creations will be forever cherished by all. Cecelia was also a member of the Luncheon Pilot Club of Chesapeake and was a Chesapeake Master Gardener Volunteer. Her selfless personality was greatly reflected in her numerous volunteer hours which served her community. She also thoroughly enjoyed her projects and get-togethers as one of the "Garden Girls."
Ceil even partially came out of retirement to take on the role of a preschool teacher to her great-niece, Harper. She spent countless hours developing a curriculum and creating hands-on materials for her lessons. These days quickly became a favorite for both student and teacher.During COVID, Ceil was also teaching herself to watercolor paint via YouTube, which she proved to be a natural at. Her handmade holiday cards and paintings were cherished by her family members as they brought a smile every time they arrived in the mail.

Cecelia was predeceased by her beloved parents, Frank and Vera Shaw. She leaves behind her best friend and loving husband of 43 years, George G Rochevot. She also leaves behind her brother, Timothy F. Shaw (Gayle) and two sisters, Carol S. Krause, and Maureen S. Fleetwood (Charles). Her nieces and nephews include Elizabeth, Dana, Amy, and Tyler. Her great-nieces and nephews include Teddy, Desmond, and Harper. Additionally, there are numerous cousins and close friends.

Cecelia loved that her home was the family gathering place for all holidays, birthdays, and events. She wouldn't have had it any other way, and neither would any of her family members. They'll never forget her live holiday entertainment, which brought a smile to everyone's faces.

May the road rise to meet you. May the wind always be at your back. May the sunshine warm upon your face. The rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.
