Born November 22, 1926, she was a native of Whiteville, NC and the youngest daughter of the late Haynes Ivey and Curlie Shepard Ivey. She was married for 61 years to the late Pebble Otto Piland, Jr.

As a young woman, Katherine worked at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard during World War II. Her greatest joy was being a homemaker to her husband, children and extended family and was known for her home-cooking and sense of humor. A woman of great faith, Katherine was a member for many years of Kempsville Baptist Church and a founding member of Salem Baptist Church. At First Baptist Church of Norfolk, she participated in the Worship Choir, the Young at Heart Choir and faithfully served as a volunteer for the Wednesday evening church dinners.
