Mary Katherine Piland, 91, of San Antonio, TX, formerly of Virginia Beach, VA, went home to be with the Lord on June 9, 2018. Born November 22, 1926, she was a native of Whiteville, NC and the youngest daughter of the late Haynes Ivey and Curlie Shepard Ivey. She was married for 61 years to the late Pebble Otto Piland, Jr.

Katherine is survived by her children, Randy K. Hinson and wife, Gloria; Joi P. Pierce and her husband, David; and Mark I. Piland and his wife, Wanda; three grandchildren, Ryan L. Pierce and his wife, Erin; Jordan M. Pierce and his wife, Tracy; and Isabella I. Piland; and five great-grandchildren.

As a young woman, Katherine worked at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard during World War II. Her greatest joy was being a homemaker to her husband, children and extended family and was known for her home-cooking and sense of humor. A woman of great faith, Katherine was a member for many years of Kempsville Baptist Church and a founding member of Salem Baptist Church. At First Baptist Church of Norfolk, she participated in the Worship Choir, the Young at Heart Choir and faithfully served as a volunteer for the Wednesday evening church dinners.

A homegoing celebration will be held at 11 a.m. at Graham Funeral Home, 1112 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake on Thursday, June 14, 2018 with Dr. Dick Baker officiating. The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. prior to the service.
