Obituary for George Edward McGovern (GiGi)

George "GiGi" Edward McGovern, 75, passed away peacefully August 7, 2016. George was born in Brooklyn, NY to the late James and Alice Dunn McGovern. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and Old Dominion University; he was also a member of Trinity Church, Virginia Beach and retired from Virginia Beach Public Schools where he was a teacher, coach, principal and assistant superintendent. He recently served as chairman of the Virginia Beach City Personnel Board as well as working with the Kempsville Presbyterian Church Food Pantry. George was a great man of faith and an inspiration to many.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 32 years, Mary Domme McGovern; daughter, Kerry M Good (Chris), sons, James E. McGovern (Kim) and John "Jay" McGovern (Christy); grandchildren, Elizabeth, Kathleen, Emily, Tres, Margaret, Grace, Jack and Reaves; sisters, Gail Kilkenny, Ann DeLaney and Patty McGovern; brother, James McGovern; father-in-law, Gerald Domme and sister-in-law, Cynthia Domme Kittrell (Bryant); loving neices and nephews, friends and faithful prayer warriors. Besides his parents he was predeceased by a brother, John McGovern, niece, Alex Kitrell and his mother-in-law, Maropia Domme.

The family will receive friends at Graham Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 1112 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake on Wednesday, August 10, 2016 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held Thursday, August 11, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Church, 401 35th Street, Virginia Beach with Pastor Randy Singer and Pastor Neil Ellison officiating. A reception at the church will be held immediately following the service. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk at 2:30 p.m. The family would like to thank Dr. Brian Czito and Dr. Michael Morse of Duke University Medical Center, Dr. Jennifer DeLaney, Dr. David Waddell, Dr. Thomas Alberico and the staff at Westminster Canterbury.
